Business Information: ADRIAN JOHNSTONE TAXIDERMIST.
History and Background
Adrian Johnstone started his hobby of taxidermy at a very young age, around ten or eleven years old. His first resource was a book from the Darlington library titled 'Step by Step Taxidermy,' which helped him learn the basics. Many of his early subjects were small birds found by the roadside while out cycling on weekends, mostly victims of road traffic.
At age eighteen, Adrian moved to Harrogate in North Yorkshire to pursue a full-time career as a taxidermist. He completed a three-year apprenticeship with a company called Starbek Taxidermy, formerly known as The World of Nature from Kirby Fleetham. Later, he returned to Darlington and opened a workshop in 1984, where he prepared and sold taxidermy. He also operated a shop on High Northgate from June 1986 until December 2007.
We still employ many traditional taxidermy techniques today. We use woodwool for making mannequins, glass eyes for a realistic effect, and natural poses for every animal and bird we work on.
Additionally, we freeze dry some smaller specimens. This process is well-known and produces results similar to traditional taxidermy. However, it requires a little extra aftercare, such as spraying your taxidermy with an anti-moth spray or using mothballs where your item is kept. Please contact us for more information.
We are a small, friendly business renowned for our professionalism and quality of work.
Please note the following statement:
I possess the necessary evidence to support the sale of the listed item.
This includes documentary proof that the item was not taken illegally from the wild.
By law, anyone selling taxidermy must maintain a logbook and number all British birds in their possession. All details—such as the name and address of the supplier, cause, date, location of death, age and sex—must be recorded in this logbook, along with the name and address of the buyer.
Every bird I list and sell is numbered, with the unique log number marked underneath the base, which can be verified in my 'birds received' log book.
I have been engaged in full-time taxidermy since 1981 and consistently adhere to wildlife laws.
Regarding the General Data Protection Regulation, we are legally required to keep a record of your name and address. We may also need to share this information with the Animal Health and Plant Agency (AHPA), the department responsible for issuing our licences.
Please only purchase this taxidermy item if you agree to us storing your information on file and, if required, sharing it with the AHPA.
